Practical questions
Cooking for One: Portions, Storage and Less Food Waste
Recipes and supermarket packs often assume several people will eat together. If you live alone, a large recipe can leave you choosing between eating more than you want, repeating the same meal or throwing food away. This is a planning problem, not a reason to blame yourself or skip a proper meal.

Buy for usable meals rather than imagined savings
Check whether a pack can be divided, whether the unused ingredients suit another meal and whether your storage is adequate. An ambitious batch-cooking plan may not help if the freezer is full or you dislike reheated food. Start with a realistic quantity for your household, and account for work meals or days when you will not be home.

Separate serving from saving the leftovers
Think about a portion that fits the meal and your needs, rather than using the pan as the serving size. The remainder can have its own storage plan if it is suitable to keep. You are not obliged to finish a package to justify buying it. If portion decisions repeatedly create anxiety or compensatory restriction, discuss that with a professional rather than imposing stricter food rules.
Keep food safety separate from calorie decisions
Use appropriate containers, follow storage instructions and keep raw ingredients separate from ready-to-eat food. Refrigeration and safe preparation still matter when a meal is marketed as healthy or high protein. If you do not know whether leftovers have been stored safely, do not rely on the desire to avoid waste as proof that they are suitable to eat.
Common questions
Must I batch cook?
No. Choose an approach that suits your equipment, storage and preferences, not a routine that only works on paper.
Does finishing the food prevent waste?
Eating beyond what you want is not the only option. Reviewing pack size and storage can prevent the same dilemma next time.
Can I judge storage safety from calories?
No. Nutritional information and food-safety instructions answer different questions.
